Childhood sexual abuse was once a taboo subject not often discussed. Today, especially since the commencement of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, many people are now talking about it and stories are frequently appearing in the media.
Men dealing with the effects of childhood sexual abuse can have a difficult journey ahead of them. Feelings of shame, guilt and secrecy can affect survivors of child sexual assault well into their adult life.
Many men remain isolated and distressed by their memories of abuse and try to calm their feelings of distress with drugs, alcohol and gambling. Many survivors also struggle with depression and anxiety.
SURVIVORS & MATES SUPPORT NETWORK
(SAMSN) runs eight-week groups, 2hrs a week, for men who were sexually assaulted as boys or adolescents. Our groups are co-facilitated by two therapists experienced in working with male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Participants find that talking in a safe group environment with other guys who have gone through similar experiences can be a positive and significant step forward in their recovery.
Any man experiencing the effects of child sexual abuse should know it was not his fault and that healing and recovery is possible. SAMSN is here to help and our services are FREE!
SAMSN is a not-for-profit charity and is not affiliated with any religious organisation.
